January in your Garden: What should I be doing?

CONTINUE to plant your trees and shrubs this month. If you have annuals its important to deadhead if you want to see new blooms. If you want tulip or hyacinth bulbs, plant them now. Start your lettuces, cauliflower, broccoli and eggplant seedlings in the greenhouse (or indoors for most of us).

PREPARING for our rainy season. Things will stay wet from now until Spring so check for drainage problems but don't till wet soil as it will do more damage than good. Start building raised beds if you have to because root rot is the surest way to kill most perennials and herbs.

ANTICIPATING what your dream garden should have. Make sketches of plans, order your seeds and supplies. If you're unsure of your soils pH or fertility now is the time to take samples to have tested. Also have your garden tools serviced and ready to go!!
